The Secret Garden

Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden is hardly a secret these days, but it’s still one of Sydney’s most peaceful and secluded spots, with stunning views across the harbour to boot.

The garden is an easy stroll down Lavender Street from Milson’s Point station, and the jewel in the crown of one of my favourite harbour short walks. After working your way down the slope of the rambling terraced gardens, stopping at benches shaded by glorious Bangalow Palms and surrounded by patches of herbs and sprawling violets, you come to the enormous Moreton Bay fig tree sprawled below the Whiteley home. Off to the left, a tunnel takes you under the disused railway line and down to the water’s edge, where it’s a lovely stroll around the bay, through Luna Park, up past the art deco Olympic swimming pool under the shadow of the bridge, and back up the hill to the station.
